A DeBary dentist has had her license suspended amid allegations that she used laughing gas before performing dental work.

Dr. Sharon Ann Day-Osteen entered drug treatment in June after being accused of inhaling nitrous oxide at her office during the work day and in front of patients, but she was terminated from the program in September because of noncompliance, according to an order from the Florida Department of Health suspending her license.

“Due to her chemical dependence, Dr. Day-Osteen does not possess the physical and mental ability and the judgment necessary to practice dentistry safely,” the order states.

Day-Osteen could not be reached for comment Friday at her home and office, which is at 190 N. U.S. 17-92, Suite 101. Day-Osteen has been licensed to practice dentistry in Florida since 1996, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Nitrous oxide can produce dizziness and euphoria when inhaled recreationally. It is used in dentistry to control pain and anxiety during procedures.

While undergoing treatment at the Vince Carter Sanctuary in Flagler County, Day-Osteen had three positive drug screens for alcohol, opiates and hydrocodone, according to the order.

It's not unheard of for dentists to become addicted to nitrous oxide, said Dr. Douglas Davies, medical director of The Refuge drug rehabilitation center near Ocala.

Dentists often work alone, carry the stress of owning their own practice and have unfettered access to nitrous oxide, a drug not as tightly controlled as prescription pain medication, he said.

“It is considered an occupational hazard,” Davies said. “Physicians are just humans. They have substance abuse problems at the same rate as the rest of us.”

Davies, also an anesthesiologist, entered treatment in the late 1990s after becoming addicted to a pain-relieving drug that he used on patients when putting them to sleep for open-heart surgery.

Help is available for health care professionals who become addicted to drugs, Davies said. A state program allows them to keep their license provided they complete a treatment program and undergo drug screenings.
