**DEATH OF A LAKE - REBIRTH OF A RIVER**
Erected in 1913, the Condit Dam, which supplied electric power to some 8000 homes and buildings, on 26 October, went out in a blaze of glory as approximately 700 lbs (318 Kg) of TNT, set by demolition engineers, blew a large hole through its center. The twelve-story dam, located in the state of Washington, restricted the White Solomon River flow, thus forming Northwestern Lake. However, several decades later, state and federal officials, as well as private environmentalists, realized the dam’s threat to the fish population in the region outweighed its electric-production benefits. After years of planning and environmental consultation, Portland-based owner, PacifiCorp, finally began the demolition process, which should conclude in August, 2012. By then, the White Solomon River will be fully returned to its original form, allowing solomon and other specie of fish to flourish much farther upstream, as they had been doing for millions of years until the dam’s construction interrupted this in the early part of the 20th century. Below are two videos, the first, a time-lapse recording of the draining of Northwestern Lake, and the second, the 700 lbs of TNT breaching Condit Dam. :) |

Re: **DEATH OF A LAKE - REBIRTH OF A RIVER**
I ain't watched the 2nd clip yet but the first one is sweet. I thought this was gonna be a timelapse of a lake running it's cycle naturally but this was good. I have no idea why but I have constant dreams of the lake I swam in as a kid at my grandparent's old property. Good memories of swimming, fishing or going down to the lake to watch out for deer and other wildlife. Many family members there, cousins, aunts and uncles. We get those huge black inner tubes. We'd be in the lake lazing on those and occasionally one of our dogs would fuck around the beaver den at the other end and the beavers would swim out and peacefully past us. I haven't been out there in a while but for years I've had dreams about being in it, but it is super shallow and I get scared, because I get creeped out at water bottoms. Strange. I got sidetracked but now that I remember it. Did anyone notice that mistiness that went across the screen at about 1:50 and then something red pops in through the trees. |
