Deadly Bacteria Kills Houston Man
Deadly Bacteria Kills Houston-Area Man Only on FOX Updated: Thursday, 19 May 2011, 10:15 PM CDT Published : Thursday, 19 May 2011, 10:15 PM CDT SALLY MACDONALD SALLY MACDONALD Reporter HOUSTON - A local man simply scratched his leg, setting off a chain of events that killed him. Matt Finn's family said an aggressive bacteria entered his blood stream. He was hospitalized days after he went fishing in Greens Bayou, Finn's son said. "He was the 'biggest fish' guy,” said Matthew Finn IV, the victim’s son. “He always had to have the biggest fish." This month, the elder Finn's fish tale is more like something out of a science fiction movie. Finn's son watched his dad change before his eyes. "He developed a purple dot right between the eyes, and within 2 hours it spread over his face and his abdominal parts and within 6 hours he was completely purple," said Finn. Finn and his son were fishing in a freshwater tributary of Greens Bayou. The son said his dad entered a trash-filled area of the bayou to retrieve a line and suffered a small cut on his leg. "When I say a minor cut, it looked like a cat scratch," said Finn. The family believes bacteria in the water turned the minor scratch into a massive infection. The father of 3, who was engaged to be married, was left horribly disfigured. Finn died Monday, just 11 days after getting into the water. "Honestly it wasn't even 11 days. He was gone a week before that. It took 2 or 3 days, and he was on full life support, dialysis, and his organs had already shut down." It's a scary reality the younger Finn realizes could have been his. He won't go back to the bayou to fish and wants others to stay away, too. The family said doctors haven't been able to specifically identify the kind of bacteria that killed Finn. The Harris County Health Department urges the family to file a report so it can investigate.
