Daniela Klette: One of Europe's Most Wanted Fugitives Arrested

A former member of a disbanded militant group linked to robberies and attempted murder, the RAF has been arrested in Germany after more than 30 years on the run.

Daniela Klette, 65, offered no resistance as she was detained in a Berlin flat on Monday evening, said Friedo de Vries, head of the criminal investigation department in Lower Saxony.

Klette was found alone and police also seized a pistol, two magazines and cartridges in the apartment block in the Kreuzberg district of the capital.

Ms de Vries also said there had been a second arrest in Berlin, but the person's identity had not yet been confirmed.

Klette was later taken by helicopter to a jail in the northern German city of Bremen.

She was a member of the left-wing Red Army Faction (RAF), whose violent campaign against what it said was US imperialism and capitalist oppression of workers, left 34 people dead and hundreds more injured.

Police have been hunting her for years, along with her former colleagues, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who were all put on Europol's Europe's Most Wanted list in 2020.

Authorities stepped up their efforts to detain the fugitives after receiving a tip-off from the public in November.

That led to an appeal on a popular TV crime show two weeks ago, which brought in 250 further tips that police are still working through.

The trio have been linked to at least 12 robberies in northern Germany between 1999 and 2016 and are also wanted for attempted murder.

Their alleged heists were carried out to raise funds, rather than for political motives, authorities believe.

The Red Army Faction emerged from German student protests against the Vietnam War, but declared itself disbanded in 1998.

The group was behind the 1993 bombing of a newly-built prison in Darmstadt, south of Frankfurt. No one was injured in the attack which was the RAF's last major act before it dissolved.

The RAF described itself as a communist and anti-imperialist urban guerrilla group. It was engaged in armed resistance against what it considered a fascist state. Members of the RAF generally used the Marxist–Leninist term faction when they wrote in English.

Early leadership included Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof, Gudrun Ensslin, and Horst Mahler. The West German government considered the RAF a terrorist organization.

The RAF engaged in a series of bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, bank robberies, and shoot-outs with police over the course of three decades.

Its activities peaked in late 1977, which led to a national crisis that became known as the "German Autumn".

The RAF has been held responsible for 34 deaths, including industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer, the Dresdner Bank head Jürgen Ponto, federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback, police officers, American servicemen stationed in Germany, as well as many cases of collateral damage, such as chauffeurs and bodyguards, with many others injured throughout its almost thirty years of activity; 26 RAF members or supporters were killed.

It's always nice to see criminals caught decades later. She probably thought she was safe after 30 fucking years!

Re: Daniela Klette: One of Europe's Most Wanted Fugitives Arrested

On May 27, 2026, former Red Army Faction (RAF) militant Daniela Klette was sentenced to 13 years in prison by a high-security court in Verden, Germany.

The 67-year-old, once considered one of Europe's most-wanted women, was convicted on multiple counts of aggravated robbery, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, and weapons violations.

The 14-month trial focused on a string of sophisticated, armed robberies committed between 1999 and 2016.

According to the court ruling by Judge Lars Engelke, Klette and her two fugitive accomplices—Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub—operated with a strict division of labor.

They used heavy weapons, including a grenade launcher, to assault supermarkets and armored cash transport vehicles across northern Germany.

The trio successfully stole more than €2 million ($2.4 million).

The court established that these raids were not politically motivated, but were carried out purely as their work to financially sustain their lives in hiding after the RAF formally disbanded in 1998.

Klette evaded the police for over 30 years. For roughly two decades, she lived a surprisingly normal double life in Berlin’s hip Kreuzberg district under the alias "Claudia Ivone".

Neighbors knew her as a friendly woman who regularly walked her dog. She took vacations abroad, attended dance classes, and participated in a local Capoeira martial arts club.

She was not caught by police investigative work, but rather by an investigative journalist who tracked her down using AI facial recognition software.

The software matched old wanted posters to recent photos posted on her Capoeira club's Facebook page.

When police raided her apartment in February 2024, they discovered a hidden arsenal, including a Kalashnikov rifle, a replica rocket-propelled grenade, false IDs, wigs, gold bars, and €240,000 in cash.

Klette remained unapologetic throughout her trial. She claimed the trial was politically motivated and used her platform to rail against "capitalism and the patriarchy," aligning herself with current far-left protests.

When the 13-year sentence was read, a group of roughly 50 far-left supporters in the public gallery caused an uproar, chanting "Freedom for Daniela!" before being escorted out by security.

Klette's defense lawyer, Lukas Theune, has announced they will appeal the verdict.

While Klette cannot face terrorism charges for her past RAF membership due to the statute of limitations, her legal troubles are far from over.

She is still facing a separate trial brought by federal prosecutors in Frankfurt for her alleged involvement in three major 1990's attacks:

1. A failed bombing at a Deutsche Bank building in 1990.

2. A 1991 shooting where 57 bullets hit the US embassy in Bonn.

3. A 1993 explosive attack on a newly constructed prison.

Meanwhile, her two alleged accomplices, Staub (72) and Garweg (57), remain completely untraceable.
