I think a lot of people know and think about the consequences of getting caught. But those same people think the odds of getting caught are slim or worth the risk.

I'm willing to bet if the consequence for robbing a store (or other crime) was getting your hand cut off instead of a year in jail getting food, healthcare, etc. ..there would be a drop it crime.

It doesn't work, you can receive the death sentence for murder but look how many murders are committed everyday in the US, does that stop them? If somebody's going to commit a crime they're going to do it regardless of the consequences.

Many people don't think "Big Picture". They only think about "Right Now". Those kinds of people, if criminals, will only think about instant gratification and not about the consequences of their actions.

Those people will always do bad things, regardless of the punishment.

Death penalty in the US is a joke. And let's say the person still commits a crime..if the punishment was harsh such as death or an eye for an eye thing, do you think they would be repeat offenders?

Either execute him or throw him in an Iranian prison for the rest of his life, the latter would be worse than mutilation and being free as their prison conditions aren't a walk in the park.

Impose a sentence of lifetime solitary confinement 24 hours a day in a tiny EMPTY (No books and etc, only a toilet) concrete cell with six months of complete darkness and then six months of nonstop bright light; such a sentence would be worse than the death penalty.

I'd rather have my eyes gouged out.
