Corpses 9 and 10 Found Near NY Beach. (12 April 2011)

Investigators have found three more sets of human remains on a beach near New York City, bringing to eight the number of corpses found there.

Police in Suffolk County, New York suspect a serial killer.

Four women working as prostitutes were found dead nearby in 2010; a body found last week has not been identified.

The latest bodies were found in a patch of dense brush on Gilgo Beach, a barrier island south of Long Island, about 45 miles (70km) east of New York.

Police scouring the beach on foot, from helicopters and at the end of fire engine ladders discovered the three newest bodies on Monday, about a mile east of where the first group of bodies were discovered.

Officials cautioned they had yet to link the newest discoveries conclusively with the five bodies previously found.

The remains were separated by about 500m. The search was expected to continue on Tuesday.

It took investigators a month to identify the first group of remains using DNA and dental records as prostitutes who had arranged to meet clients through Craigslist and other websites, police have said.

Investigators continue to search for the remains of Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman who was last seen in May at nearby Oak Beach, where she had arranged to meet a client she had met through Craigslist.

A resident of the beach told authorities a woman believed to be Ms Gilbert came to his door at 0445 pleading for help, then fled.

'Serial killer' deaths eyed by police in New York

Police are investigating the possibility a serial killer may have left four bodies alongside a short stretch of road in New York state.

The bodies were discovered on Saturday and Monday in Long Island as police were looking for a 24-year-old woman reported missing on nearby Fire Island.

Shannon Gilbert, who worked as a prostitute, had arranged through a website to meet a client on the island, just east of New York City.

Ms Gilbert was last seen on 1 May 2010.

Investigators found the four badly decomposed bodies near Cedar Beach along a quarter-mile (0.5km) stretch of road, while searching for Ms Gilbert.

Forensic experts

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told reporters it looked as if the four bodies found had been thrown from a vehicle and had been decomposing over an 18-month period.

Using DNA samples and dental records, forensic experts had determined that at least two of the four bodies were female, he said.

The victims appeared to have been killed elsewhere before being dumped along the road, which separates Jones Beach State Park from smaller beaches to its east, Mr Dormer said.

He said it was not yet known if Ms Gilbert's body was among those found in the past few days.

Ms Gilbert, from Jersey City, was reportedly headed to a beach on Fire Island, about three miles from where the bodies were discovered, when she disappeared.

She had arranged to meet a client there through the classified ads website Craigslist.

NY Times's coverage on this story

Investigators on Long Island discovered the remains of three more people on a barrier beach on Monday, bringing the number of remains found nearby to eight since the police began searching for a missing prostitute late last year.

The grim discoveries began in December, when the police found the bodies of four female prostitutes near one another close to a highway on Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County, leading the police to believe that a serial killer had dumped them there.

After a search throughout the winter, complete with dogs trained to sniff out cadavers, the police turned up a fifth set of remains last Tuesday near Oak Beach, about a mile east of where the first four bodies were found.

The authorities have not yet identified the fifth set of remains, and would not speculate about the identities of the three discovered Monday, in the brush off the north side of Ocean Parkway between Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach. It was not clear how long the remains had been there or if there was any connection between the most recent discoveries and the first four.

The first four women, all in their 20s, had advertised their services on Craigslist, the authorities have said. Phone records and eyewitnesses have placed at least two of the women at budget hotels on Long Island in recent years, just before they went missing.

The police began combing the beach last year as part of the search for Shannan Gilbert, 24, a prostitute from Jersey City who went missing in May. None of the four bodies discovered in December were hers. A law enforcement official said the fifth set of remains were not Ms. Gilbert’s either.

On Monday, investigators could be seen combing through several areas of brush about 50 yards from the road on the west side of a quiet stretch of Ocean Parkway.

Twenty-five new recruits aided in the search; the police used fire-truck ladders, which were laid over the bramble so they could see into the brush, and a chain saw. The police said investigators would remain in the area overnight.

Melanie Englert, 34, was driving from work in New Hyde Park to see a friend in Bayshore when she saw the investigators and pulled into a small parking lot on the side of the road. “I saw them unloading big cardboard boxes and going into the brush and I said, ‘Oh boy,’ ” said Ms. Englert, who had just heard that three bodies had been found. “It’s super shocking. I can’t believe it.”

Brendan Byrne, 36, who lives near the scene, said the police had searched the backyards of homes in his neighborhood earlier in the day.

“My fiancée sent me a text that said: ‘They’re in our backyard. Literally.’ ”

Re: Corpses 9 and 10 Found Near NY Beach. (12 April 2011)

NBC's article on the story.

3 more sets of human remains found on NY beach

OAK BEACH, N.Y. — Investigators scouring dense undergrowth for victims of a suspected serial killer along a remote New York beach area found three more sets of remains Monday, authorities said, bringing the total number of bodies to eight.

The new remains are in addition to a set found last week along a highway leading to popular Jones Beach, about 45 miles east of New York City. That victim has not been identified, and police have not positively connected it to the bodies of four prostitutes found nearby in December.

Police searching on foot and from above in helicopters and fire truck buckets found the latest three sets of remains as they scoured tick-infested underbrush and evergreens on the barrier island south of Long Island, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.

They also used cadaver dogs, police academy cadets, detectives and volunteer firefighters. A search was expected to resume Tuesday.

The four dead prostitutes were found in December in the area, a 4-foot-tall tangle of sea grass punctuated by scrubby pine trees. Police suspect a serial killer but so far have no suspects.

It took more than a month to identify the four women found in December. The New York City medical examiner's office is helping Suffolk County officials investigate the latest discovery.

Investigators have searched the area, roughly 7.5 miles, several times since December. Dormer said the discovery of the latest remains gives investigators new possible leads into the killings of all the victims.

Forensic testing determined that the body found last week was not that of Shannan Gilbert, a missing Jersey City, N.J., woman. Because authorities have DNA samples from her family, a comparison to the latest remains "should come pretty quickly," Dormer said.

Gilbert, 24, was last seen in Oak Beach on May 1, 2010, after apparently meeting a client she had booked through Craigslist. The bodies of the four other women, who worked as Craigslist escorts and were in their 20s, were found along the same highway by police searching for Gilbert.

The latest discovery was about a mile east of where the other four were found. The four dead women's remains were strewn about 500 yards apart.

Gilbert had arranged to meet a client in Oak Beach. A resident of the gated seaside enclave has told authorities a woman believed to be Gilbert came to his door around 4:45 a.m. May 1, pleading for help.

The man said that when he tried to call police, the woman fled.

A few moments later, an unidentified man in a sport utility vehicle drove past the house and said he was looking for the woman, but then took off. Neither the woman nor the man was seen by the neighbor again.

The client Gilbert had arranged to meet was investigated but is not believed to be a suspect in her disappearance.

"We still believe that Shannan Gilbert is in this area," Dominick Varrone, Suffolk County's chief of detectives, told reporters, although he did not elaborate.

Police have found what they suspect may be human remains in two separate locations near a New York beach, in the same area where eight corpses have already been discovered.

A skull was found in brush about 90ft (27m) from a highway on Long Island on Monday, Lt Kevin Smith said.

Another set of remains was unearthed earlier in the day.

Since December, eight corpses have been found in the region. Police suspect a serial killer could be at large.

The latest discovery was made as police expanded their search from Long Island's Suffolk County to Jones Beach in Nassau County, just east of the New York City border.

Police also made several discoveries of bones on Monday that were quickly determined to be animals.

Of the skull, Lt Smith said: "Whether it is human or not, is unknown at this point."

Craigslist escorts

The latest search was sparked by the discovery of four sets of remains in the past two weeks along Ocean Parkway, which leads to the popular Jones Beach State Park.

Police sent the two sets of remains, which were found several miles apart, to the medical examiner's office to confirm whether they were human.

The bodies of four women who worked as escorts were found in the region in December.

Those remains, which were identified using DNA and dental records, were found while authorities were following up on the disappearance of a woman from New Jersey seen working as a escort in the Long Island area.

Investigators continue to search for the remains of Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman who was last seen in May at nearby Oak Beach, where she had arranged to meet a client she had met through Craigslist.

Police have not officially linked the discoveries in the past several weeks with those found in December.

US teen summer hot spot is killer's dumping ground

A section of coastline near New York has gone from favourite summer hot spot to being called a serial killer's dumping ground.

Eight bodies have been found in scrubland to the south of Long Island.

Four have so far been identified as prostitutes who advertised on the American small ads website craigslist.

Police are also expecting to find the body of 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, another call girl who went missing in the area last year.

Michelle Russo, 19, lives in nearby Babylon and works in a high street bagel shop.

"I just heard there are eight bodies found," she says.

'It's scary'

"A lot of kids my age go to that beach in the summer. It's very popular. Families go there every day."

But she says her friends will be worried about going back now this has happened.

"It's scary finding bodies. It probably won't be as popular this year."

Because the killer apparently targets prostitutes, local papers have started calling him Jack the Ripper.

Police with specially trained dogs have spent days combing the undergrowth around the beaches.

Search hampered

They've also called in local firefighters who are peering down from platforms on cranes extended over the bushes.

"It gives you a different vantage point," says Inspector Stuart Cameron, the police officer in charge of the search.

"Maybe you'll see something from up there that you won't see from on the ground."

The search has been hampered though by the difficult terrain the teams are working in.

Officers say they're being made ill by poison ivy and they're being attacked by ticks that latch onto your skin and suck your blood.

"None of them are complaining," says Inspector Cameron. "They're very motivated to find any missing persons that are out there, to bring closure to the families.

"I've never been involved in anything this large.

"It's a serious investigation and we're treating it seriously."
