Lots of cops are scared of dogs. Many dogs hate people in uniform - they find them scary and intimidating.

Deputy who shot 10-year-old identified; more charges on suspects

COFFEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Investigators have released the name of a Coffee County deputy who shot a 10-year-old boy while working to capture a wanted man.
Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten identified the deputy involved as Michael Vickers.

Vickers is 36 years old, according to his Facebook page. Information posted to the page also said he is employed with the Broxton Police Department in addition to the Coffee County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Wooten Confirmed July 11th that the boy, identified as Dakota Corbitt, had been shot during a manhunt for a suspect wanted in the shooting of a Douglas Police officer.

Vickers is also member of the Coffee County Drug Unit and an experienced senior officer. Wooten says Vickers reacted quickly in a dangerous situation.

"I don't want to second guess anyone in a situation like that, I would not want to be second guessed and no one else should second guess him,' said Wooten.

He said Deputy Michael Vickers feels remorseful about the shooting.

"He has three children and it would prey on anybody's mind that a child was hurt, but if you have anything to do with it, its really preying on his mind," said Wooten.

Dakota Corbitt was released from Savannah Memorial Hospital and was expected to make a full recovery, but his mother said her son was back in Savannah Monday for a checkup on his injured leg.

Amy Corbitt said her son's leg is not healing properly. She didn't know the exact condition Monday afternoon, but she did say it was taking a turn for the worse. She said she hopes her son will be back in Douglas on Tuesday.

The situation of how the child was shot remains unclear. Sheriff Wooten said Vickers was approaching the property when a dog ran up to him. The deputy's gun fired one shot, missing the dog and hitting the child.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Eastman was called to investigate the shooting. They said no charges were filed against Deputy Vickers. Officials said he was on a pre-approved vacation Monday, and will be on administrative duty after he returns.
"I want to make sure that he's ready before he goes back out, because he's really upset about this. I can not explain to you how upset he is about it," said Wooten.

The shooting happened during the arrest of Christopher Barnett. Barnett is believed to be the person who shot a Douglas Police Officer early on July 10th. He is also believed to have been involved in an Armed Robbery that happened at a Flash Foods in Douglas before the officer was shot. That officer was later identified as Larry Carter.

Barnett has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault with a gun, two counts of possession of a firearm while committing a crime, and aggravated assault on a police officer.

The driver of the car during the armed robbery, Andre Maurice Warner, was also charged with armed robbery.

Barnett was denied bond at a bond hearing July 11th. Investigators said he was originally from Florida with a lengthy criminal record.
