Re: Colorado Man Fatally Shoots Stepdaughter Mistaken for Burglar
I understand your point but when it comes to training for home defense, you are in a defensive mode and the main concern is safety....which means (for the average person) trying not to engage a potentially armed intruder. The average gun owner flat out doesn't have the skill set needed to safely clear a room or a home (most may think they do but realistically they don't). When you take a gun safety course, they will tell you the same thing. Also keep in mind that me saying 'the police have been called....stay back, I have a gun' in no way puts me at a disadvantage (so long as I move after I speak so they don't just shoot at my voice obviously). It informs the intruder that, not only is law enforcement on the way but if the intruder wants to use me as a hostage, they will be walking head on into a gun fight....they have to be overly confident or suicidal to blindly enter a room with a person they feel is armed. I mean, even with a gun would you blindly try to enter a room with a person who claims is armed....you don't know where in the room the person is, what they are armed with (in my case, you'd be met with a 12ga and I'd be behind cover) or if they are alone (in my case, there would be a good chance that my wife would also be armed)? So declaring you have a gun would be wise in a home defense situation. If you were a cop or in a more tactical situation, obviously giving away anything isn't smart.... |
