Coach crash: Three killed in bus that may have been overloaded

Happened just down thw road from me... investigators are expected to look into whether a coach that crashed and killed three people on its way back from Bestival was carrying too many passengers.
A coach that hit a tree and overturned on its way back from Bestival music festival, killing three people, could have been overloaded.

The vehicle had 52 seats including the driver’s, yet 53 people have been accounted for following the crash, Surrey Police said.

The driver and two passengers were declared dead at the scene while others suffered “life-changing” injuries after the coach left the A3 in Surrey at 11.50pm last night between the Hindhead tunnel and the Thursley exit.

Investigators are now expected to inquire into whether the coach had taken on too many passengers.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “We can’t say for certain that it was overloaded but I think it’s something the investigators will have to look into.

“There were 52 seats in total and the number we’ve got is 53 (people) which seems to suggest there were more (people than seats).

“There may be reasons behind that and other factors involved.”

The coach was returning to Merseyside following the festival on the Isle of Wight and was operated by bus company MerseyPride.

Its driver was named as Colin Daulby, from Warrington, who was in his early 60s.

Mike Dower, the manager of the coach company, said: "Colin was a personal friend and a brilliant driver who was very conscientious.

"He'd only been with us for a few months but was very experienced and he had a great rapport with everyone.

"The news is very upsetting and we wish to offer our condolences to his family and the other families affected.

"This is the first time this kind of thing has happened in the company."

Mr Dower said he doubted whether driver error or tiredness could have caused the crash and added that Mr Daulby had had a "good rest" after staying with his sister in Portsmouth.

The 16-year-old "exec coach" had been privately hired by a group of 50 people and was due to return to Liverpool in the early hours of Tuesday, he said.

Some passengers lost limbs after it hit a tree on an embankment less than an hour away from Portsmouth.

Yup.

When a train or coach slides along the ground and the passengers stack up against the side which is facing the ground, its really messy.

That middle pic looks like cirque du soleil...

Is one extra person really enough to cause a crash? No company in their right minds would would market a vehicle that went straight from full capacity to chaos and reckless endangerment by one seat, they'd be asking for a lawsuit...

Re: Coach crash: Three killed in bus that may have been overloaded

Bet he had a heart attack

Liverpool fans have paid tribute to Colin Daulby following his death in Monday evening's A3 coach tragedy.

Colin was a familiar face among Reds fans having driven the Leather Bottle Ultras supporters' club to away matches across the country for six years from 2006.

Kopite John Garner said: "I'm gutted. He was a big part of our away coach trips - he was just one of the lads and part of the family. We've lost one of the lads.

"He could never do too much for you and everyone was made welcome by him. Everyone looked forward to seeing him and you knew if you had him as a driver you were going to have a good day.

"He loved Liverpool and he loved the lads and the banter. On occasions when we needed two drivers, when he wasn't driving he'd be at the back of the bus having a laugh with us.

"Before a trip, he'd always phone me up and say, 'Do us a favour and get us a programme for our kid.'

"Our coach just won't be the same without him."

Michael Molloy, 18, from Woolton and a woman who has not yet been formally identified were also killed in the crash.

Re: Coach crash: Three killed in bus that may have been overloaded

Yeah we dealt with that...police on scene thought it might have been a tyre blow out. Not nice to deal with either way. All aged between 18 and 28 i think.
