Lawrence Lucien Jones, 53, of Arroyo Grande was arrested Monday, April 13, 2015, on suspicion of kidnapping, penetration with a foreign object and child molestation.

Correction: Because of an error by the Sheriff's Office, an earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Lawrence Jones' age; he's 63.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m. Tuesday:*The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office clarified Tuesday afternoon that Lawrence “Lenny” Jones is accused of molesting two girls under the age of 14 while they were attending a birthday party at his Arroyo Grande home.

Jones, a prominent face in the Arroyo Grande community — and current “Citizen of the Year” — has served on multiple boards for several organizations and held a real estate office in the city since 1996.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said Tuesday that an investigation into Jones began following the birthday party, around March 24. That investigation remains ongoing, Cipolla said.

In addition to his Citizen of the Year honor received in January, Jones previously served as board chair of the Arroyo Grande Chamber of Commerce, president of the Pismo Coast Association of Realtors and president of the Rotary Club of Arroyo Grande. He has also been involved in Arroyo Grande in Bloom and Arroyo Grande Tree Guild.

Jill Tucker, executive director of Woods Humane Society, said Tuesday that she was “shocked and saddened” by the allegations against Jones, who she said ended his tenure with the Humane Society’s board in March.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Jones remained in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in identifying any other potential victims. Anyone with any further information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 781-4500.

Lawrence Lucien Jones was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of kidnapping, penetration with a foreign object and child molestation.*

Jones remained in County Jail on Monday night on $500,000 bail.

The criminal investigation into the alleged incident was ongoing and more information would be released “as appropriate,” the Sheriff’s Office news release said.
