44-year-old Liu Dunhe suffered frostbite while working on his farm in the winter, but couldn’t afford the nearly $1,600 it would cost for surgery. So he took glass and matters into his own hands and endured a six-hour ordeal of severing his feet. But when his limbs started becoming infected, he was forced to go to the hospital for emergency treatment — paid for by donations from his village.
A Chinese farmer used broken glass to amputate his own feet because he couldn't afford to pay for surgery.
Liu Dunhe, 44, took the drastic action after being in so much pain from suffering frostbite.
He reportedly used the jagged edges of the glass shards to perform the horrifying six-hour DIY operation.
"I used the glass to repeatedly cut through my muscle tendon. It was astonishingly painful," the South China Morning Post reports him as saying.
"I had to swallow some alcohol to try to anaesthetize myself when I couldn't stand the pain," Dunhe added.
The man said both his feet became infected after he suffered frostbite from tending to his land barefooted.
But, having never subscribed to any health insurance plan, he did not have the $1,600 needed for surgery.
The farmer kept the news of his own surgery secret until his wounds became infected. He had surgery and anti-inflammatory treatment earlier this week.
Villagers then stepped in and raised $3,700 for his medical expenses. He is expected to be discharged from hospital within the next two weeks.
