Would you sell your daughter to buy an Apple iPhone? That's what this Chinese couple apparently did.

The young Chinese couple is now facing criminal punishment for "selling" their daughter for something between 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 to $8,200) and using a part of the money received to buy an Apple iPhone.

The couple have been charged with human trafficking after they put their third child, a daughter, for adoption through online postings.

Not just the iPhone, the mother also apparently bought high-end sports shoes and other goods.

Last year, in a somewhat similar case that highlights the craze that Apple products have created in China, a teenager had sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad.

The couple apparently told the police that they wanted the girl to have a better life than they could provide her.

"Giving away the child was not to obtain benefits, but to give the child better guarantees," one of the parents is reported to have said.
