China Mulls High-speed Train to US

China Daily 2014-05-08 -
China is considering building a high-speed railway across the Siberia and Bering Strait to Alaska, across Canada to the US. In not so distant future, people can take the train from China to the US, according to Beijing Times Thursday citing Wang Mengshu, a railway expert and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The proposed journey will start from China's northeast region, cross Siberia to Bering Strait, and run across the Pacific Ocean by undersea tunnel to reach Alaska, from Alaska to Canada, then on to its final destination, the US. To cross Bering Strait will require approximately 200km undersea tunnel, the technology, which is already in place will also be used on Fujian to Taiwan high-speed railway tunnel. The project will be funded and constructed by China. The details of this project are yet to be finalized.

If constructed, people traveling to the US from China will have a viable travel alternative to planes. With average speed of 350km per hour, passengers will complete the 1,3000km journey and reach the US in less than two days.

Re: China Mulls High-speed Train to US

I wonder if tourism from china to the US would justify the expense? I know china has money to burn but the cost of this would be huge. Would be great for freight if it was large enough to accommodate it.

Just imagine, with this, you could travel from the US to the UK by train! would take a few days and you would have to change trains 3 or 4 times but the idea is amazing. I bloody hate flying

Dear folks who are afraid to fly:

Traveling on a train that is under the ocean does not sound any less dangerous than flying.

There won't be a need for rescue crews if something goes wrong with the tunnel. You're gonna drown.

Re: China Mulls High-speed Train to US

Bullet trains across the states would be awesome but not sure if I'd get on one under the weight of an ocean. Have you ridden a Chinese operated bus? They're fucking SCARY drivers!

Dear folks who are afraid to fly:
Not afraid to fly, just don't like it. The channel tunnel is 20 years old and that's fine, only 3 fires and no deaths as far as I am aware.

This tunnel will cross the Bering straight to Alaska, that's only about 50 miles (the channel tunnel is just over 30 miles), Although the article says 200km . They have been talking of building a bridge across it for a while so if this ever got underway if say that's the option they would go with

Re: China Mulls High-speed Train to US

Not a chance in hell I'd ride a train going 350km/h.
