Car Accident Cleanup
Yesterday there was a horrible accident in my hometown. A tractor trailer plowed into a corvette and obviously the man driving passed away. He was a family friend. Everytime something like this happens I get a very morbid curiousity. When something like this happens and someone is obviously deceased in the car what is the procedure? Is the person extricated from the vehicle immediately or left inside mangled while it is being investigated? Also how is the deceased removed, who removes them, where are they taken? What if the body is entwined in the wreckage? What if a larger vehicle rests on top of the victim? I am just terribly curious and this is the only place i feel comfortable asking...  · |

I don't know the answer to all of your questions. I would assume though, that first investigators would have to determine that the driver (or any occupants) were indeed already dead. After that, it seems that in any investigation involving a dead body, the dead body isn't necessarily removed immediately. For example, in a homicide scene, the body might not be removed until later into the investigation, when all other evidence is removed. Preservation of the scene supersedes anything but preserving human life.

its left to rot away in the car,, put a plastic bag under the car to catch all the drips so they can have a funeral

Okay so the report came out today. He was pulling across the road and lost control, spun around in the wrong direction and the semi hit him head on. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body will not be immediately removed if It's obvious the person is deceased And Removing the body would prevent a proper accident and death investigation... If he's dead there's no point in rushing and screwing up something in the investigation that could later on cause problems insurance wise and for the driver, lawsuits, etc. most likely they would've transported the vehicle with him still inside if it was as serious as you say and from there they would've recovered the body during the process of investigation. From there would be autopsy and then the funeral home! (This kinda stuffs my job)

Interesting that this follows a typical pattern. Report of car/truck crash comes out, and it's assumed that the truck is at fault. Later, if it's one of the 90%+ of cases where the car was at fault (spun out and winding up facing the wrong way on the other side of the road is definitely at fault), it barely gets a mention.
