The man, who was dressed in brightly-patterned trousers and a camouflage jacket, tried to break into a convenience store in Redding, California in the early hours of March 5.
Surveillance video taken from inside the shop shows the suspect walking up to the window and looking inside, before walking away.
He returns a moment later wearing a balaclava and throws a rock at the glass. The impact, which cracks but fails to break the window, triggers the shop's burglar alarm, sending the would-be burglar fleeing.
As he tries to escape from the scene, the bungling robber falls over twice in the car park before making his getaway empty-handed.
