Bridge in Atlanta Georgia Collapses
Two Rescued After Atlanta Bridge Collapse Truck hits bridge, causes partial collapse Updated: Tuesday, 28 Jun 2011, 11:48 AM CDT Published : Tuesday, 28 Jun 2011, 8:36 AM CDT By MYFOXATLANTA STAFF/myfoxatlanta ATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta fire officials say two people were injured when a truck crashed into a railway bridge in northwest Atlanta on Tuesday morning. It happened at Bolton Road and Marietta Road just after 9 a.m. Officials say a 13-foot high truck was trying to clear the bridge, which is only 13 feet, 5 inches high, when the accident happened. FOX 5’s Darryl Carver reports the 10-wheel truck had a hydraulic lift attached to the back of it, and that’s what hit the bridge. The impact caused a 25-foot section of the bridge, at least 12 inches thick, to collapse on the south side and onto the truck, trapping the driver. Firefighters say it took nearly an hour to remove the driver from the smashed truck. The driver of the truck suffered injuries to her legs and feet, which are not life-threatening. The driver was transported to Grady Hospital for treatment. Carver reports another driver also crashed, but it’s not clear if she hit bridge debris or the truck in front of her. That driver suffered minor injuries. The accident caused Bolton Road to be shut down. Drivers were urged to avoid the area until the scene is cleared. Units from the Atlanta Police Department, City of Atlanta Department of Public Works, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), Grady EMS, and representatives from CSX railroad assisted the Atlanta Fire Department.
