Boy, 5, Calls 911 After Surviving Car Crash
A police chief pays an emotional tribute to his nephew after the boy's mother and sister were killed in the crash in New York.  By Sky News US Team A five-year-old boy has been praised after he used his mother's mobile phone to call 911 following a car crash which killed her and fatally injured his sister. Ellen Caswell, 31, was driving home in Oneida, New York, when she veered off the road and hit a utility pole, causing her car to overturn. Her son Kadyn Depasquale was unhurt, but had to climb out of the car in the dark and find her phone to call his father. He told his father: "Dad, mom and sissy are dead and I am in the woods in a bush." Despite his grief, Alex Pasquale had to convince Kadyn to hang up and call 911 because the battery on the phone was running out and he did not think they would be able to track down where the car had crashed. Police then managed to track down the car and find Kadyn after he honked the horn, but the boy's mother was pronounced dead and his 10-year-old sister Kelsey was taken to a Syracuse hospital, where she died on Monday. In a post on Facebook, Kadyn's uncle James Zophy, who is Canastota Police Chief, paid tribute to his nephew's bravery. He said: "Imagine being the parent that receives that call in the middle of the night. "The dad stayed on the phone and went to look for his son not having a clue where his child was, but knew something bad had happened and he was needed. "With some coaxing the father broke the telephone connection to his son and asked him to call 911. Neither wanted to let go fearing they wouldn't be connected again, but the young man did as he was told. "I arrived and held that little boy as tight as I could and when I asked if he was okay he said 'this is my mom's blood I only have a sunburn uncle Jim, my mom and sissy are dead and I would be if I didn't have my car seat'." Mr Zophy added: "I asked the boy if I could carry him to his dad and he said no he wanted to walk but I couldn't let any hero walk so I carried him anyway. "If I could choose my partner I'd ride with him any day. God bless you Kadyn, I love you and I hope I am as strong as you someday." The family has opened up a scholarship in Kadyn's name. Sky News |
