Boater Opens Fire on Southport Waterfront Bar Killing 3, Injuring 5
A suspect has been arrested in a shooting that left three people dead and eight others injured when a gunman on a boat opened fire with an assault rifle on a waterfront bar in the coastal North Carolina city of Southport. Authorities said Edge piloted a small boat close to shore, which was lined with bars and restaurants, stopped briefly and fired. He then sped away. Roughly half an hour after the shooting, a U.S. Coast Guard crew spotted a person matching the suspect’s description pulling a boat from the water at a public ramp on Oak Island. The person was detained and turned over to Southport police for questioning, officials said. The suspect, Nigel Edge, 39, of Oak Island, North Carolina, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said at a news conference on Sunday. Edge is also charged with five counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or injure, Coring said. Edge is being held without bail at the Brunswick County Jail and his first court appearance is scheduled for Monday. "Evil has come ashore in Southport, North Carolina. Ironically enough, at the very place which once served as a backdrop to the movie 'Safe Haven,'" said Jon David, the local district attorney, referring to the 2013 movie staring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. Accused Southport shooter Nigel Edge once escorted ‘American Idol’ star Kellie Pickler to CMT Music Awards. He recently sued her, bizarrely claiming she tried to fatally poison him with tainted Jim Beam whiskey at the star-studded event. Nigel Edge, who changed his name from Sean DeBevoise in 2023, appeared in his Marine uniform on the red carpet in 2012 alongside the singer as her special date for the night, accompanied by his service dog Rusty. “Me and my date (Sgt Sean Debevoise),” Picker said on X as she posted a picture of her with the military veteran. DeBevoise, who was wounded in Iraq, boasted about the honor of being Pickler’s date at the event. “I am ecstatic about being here at the CMT Music Awards with Kellie, even more to consider her a friend,” he said at the time, according to Taste of Country. “She is the most sincere person I know. She is an angel.” The pair had previously met at a charity event in North Carolina dedicated to the troops. Law-enforcement sources described Edge as also harboring numerous Q-Anon conspiracy theories and suffering from PTSD. His litigation against Pickler was just the latest in a series of wacky lawsuits he filed in the last year, which included numerous allegations that a cabal of “LGBTQ White Supremacists” and pedophiles were trying to murder him because he’s a “straight man.” And he even wrote a book “Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation” where he described being wounded during deployment in Iraq and claimed that was also a part of the conspiracy to kill him. Edge has said he was wounded in two separate IED attacks during a 2006 tour in Iraq, and also suffered a bullet wound that left shrapnel lodged in his head. Edge was armed with a short barrel AR rifle, equipped with a suppressor, a folding stock and scope during Saturday’s attack, court documents charge. He faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. |

I understand that he USED to go on long walks, with Kelly Pickler. SHE wasn't aware of it, however. |

Seems like PTSD was the trigger again and possible social media incitement. There should be better aftercare for war vets imo but a strong stigma exists around mental illness in the military, where veterans are often trained to be tough and suck it up. Veterans may fear that seeking help for PTSD will damage their careers or be seen as a sign of weakness by others. |

Isn't it interesting that all of these veterans begged for help from the VA for their TBI, and after receiving none, the public is shocked that this happened? It's poetic justice. Send young men off to an unjust war, they get blown up while trying to killing innocent "terrorists," and then turn the gun on the people who sent them there. "Thank you for your service" wasnt enough to take the nightmares away, I guess . Maybe instead of blasting this guy for his slow descent into crazytown, the American people should stop sending their young men to get blown up in foreign countries just so we can save a dollar per gallon on gas. Next stop, Venezuela. |
