Blind Dog, Loyal Brother, to Be Adopted

Jeffrey, who is blind, and his brother, Jermaine, will head to their new home together on Monday, according to Operation Ava http://operationava.org, a no-kill rescue organization in Philadelphia. "The unconditional love and devotion these two dogs show is positively inspirational," wrote an SPCA spokesperson on the group's Facebook page. What's even more inspirational is the fact that Jermaine has dedicated his life to being his brother's seeing eye dog. "I think this is a little bit extraordinary in my experience because they're so careful with one another and play together so well," said Ray Little, Director of Life Saving at Operation Ava. "Jeffrey really does try to maintain contact with Jermaine, especially when he's in an unfamiliar environment. As soon as he gets familiar with a new place, then he becomes a little bit more independent. But it's amazing how they try to maintain contact with each other." The pups, believed to be lab-pit mixes, were found on a Philadelphia street in October and were taken in by Operation Ava. The rescue organization received more than 10,000 inquires and multiple applications after the photo of Jeffrey and Jermaine hugging while sleeping was posted by the Chester County SPCA on Friday, November 15. They were able to place the dog brothers in the same home. Jeffrey and Jermaine reached celebrity status when the photo, and a video produced by Drexel Hill native Tom Hickey caught the attention of Ryan Seacrest who posted the heartwarming story on his website. They have been adopted. I believe when the video was shot, they were going to be going home that day or the next. They were able to place them both together, which is cool |

Good! That's awesome. I adopted my dogs together because they were dropped off at the shelter together and are so codependent. It's cute and sad at the same time.

And now they've found one with Jonathan Hochman and Veronica McKee of Springfield, Delaware County. Jonathan tells us, "Since we don't have kids of our own, it's nice to have four legged kids in house." You see, the bond between these dogs is special. Jeffrey is blind and Jermaine acts as his guide. They were abandoned in West Philadelphia in October. More than 10,000 inquiries came in to the shelter to adopt the pair. Operation Ava CEO, Claudia Gutierrez, says it was critical to find a family willing to adopt both puppies, but they were also looking for a special connection. Claudia Gutierrez, the CEO of Operation Ava, says, "It really was just a gut instinct. We saw them together and we were like, this is the family that [it] just needs to be." Veronica McKee says, "I saw the picture and thought what everybody else thought - that's the cutest thing I've ever seen. But then I realized, despite all their special needs we could nurture that bond, provide them with the environment they needed." The family is overjoyed with these new additions, but perhaps a bit skeptical is the couple's 13-year-old cat, Blabbus. "We were just discussing that this is her birthday and this probably is not the present she's looking for," Veronica said with a laugh. A little sibling rivalry aside, the future looks bright for this duo. This isn't the last you're going to hear of these popular pups.
