The Black Saturday Bushfires. Victoria, Australia. (7th February 2009)

The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of bushfires that ignited or were burning across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday 7 February 2009 during extreme bushfire-weather conditions, resulting in Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire. 173 people died as a result of the fires and 414 were injured.

As many as 400 individual fires were recorded on 7 February. Following the events of 7 February 2009, that date has since been referred to as Black Saturday.

Re: The Black Saturday Bushfires. Victoria, Australia. (7th February 2009)

NASA image of the Killmore East-Murrindindi Complex South Fire, Victoria, Australia, taken on 2009 Feb 14. "This image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite on February 14 shows the large scale of the bushfire damage to the Kinglake area (left) as well as a close-up of the burned area northeast of Yan Yean Reservoir (right), one of the reservoirs that supplies Melbourne’s water. The false-color image uses a combination of visible and near-infrared wavelengths of light to make smoke more transparent and to highlight burned areas. Unburned vegetation is red, naturally bare ground is tan, and burned areas are charcoal." Rebecca Lindsey, NASA.

Re: The Black Saturday Bushfires. Victoria, Australia. (7th February 2009)

Smoke from the 2009 Victorian bushfires spreads over the Tasman Sea and New Zealand. The imagery was acquired by the Aqua satellite, and is at 500m resolution. The image was the MODIS picture of the day on 10 February 2009.

Heartbreaking time for all Aussies, thanks for this post Guttz you always do a great job.

Some of the fires were deliberately lit around the area, by a serial arsonist/firelighter

This video shows how fast and loud the fires were.
I hope you don't mind me posting it.

Re: The Black Saturday Bushfires. Victoria, Australia. (7th February 2009)

ppl also died in car crashes trying to outrun the fire behind them but the smoke was too thick they crashed into trees and other cars.
