The Black Hotdog of Tokyo

Erm no thanks

Thanks to common sense and empirical knowledge, we've learnt that things the colour of charcoal shouldn't be put in your mouth. Coal. Charcoal. Black sand.

Japan appears to be flying in the face of such wisdom. Black food is currently in vogue in the land of the rising sun, following the success of Burger King's "Kuro Burger" (black burger), which sported black buns.

The Black Terra HotDog of Vegas Premium HotDogs in Akihabara, Tokyo, takes the craze one step further, serving customers a black 30cm frankfurter hot-dog in a black bun. The stomach-clenching colour is reportedly supplied by bamboo charcoal, a bitter-sweet food colouring agent used throughout Asia.

I think there's an old adage about that. "Never, ever, ever ask what goes in your sausage or how they made it. Just enjoy it."
I have lived by that phrase quite happily.

That being said, that black hotdog thing looks like shit from the photos. Makes me think of molten plastic. Maybe in person the consistency and smell counteract that effect, but still... I think I'll stick with regular hotdogs and burgers, thanks. [Besides, Bamboo Charcoal doesn't sound all that tasty- or healthy for that matter.]

Re: The Black Hotdog of Tokyo

Yeah a hotdog doesn't look that appetizing on its best day. This just looks bad.

Me, too! Can't stand the smell! Black, it looks like a fossil.

I eat scrapple on occasion though.

Re: The Black Hotdog of Tokyo

It looks somewhat artistic. As an edible item I will pass.
