Bill Outlawing Salvia in Texas Fails to Pass House

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A tea party Republican has killed a bill that would outlaw Salvia divinorum, a decorative plant with hallucinogenic qualities known as Diviner's Sage.

The measure would have placed Salvia under Penalty Group 3 along with peyote, codeine and steroids, punishable as a state jail felony.

But Republican Rep. David Simpson said on the House floor he would speak on the bill for 10 minutes, a move that knocked the bill off the list of bills without opposition. There isn't time to reintroduce it.

Simpson, a tea party freshman, has developed a reputation for killing bills he thinks interfere with personal liberty.

The plant, native to Mexico, is used there for religious and medical reasons. Many police departments complain teens are using the plant to get high.

Salvia is very dangerous in my opinion, it makes you hullicinate to the point that you lose control, not good if you are in an enviroment where you could do yourself some harm.

If they just went ahead and legalized weed there wouldn't be a need for people to come up with the synthetic shit in the first place.

I've heard on more than one occasion that Salvia is a waste of time, it's like being on a really bad trip that thankfully doesn't last long.

I duno about it personally, but people are gonna do whatever they wanna do to their body.

Yeah...never tried it either. I hear that there is also a synthetic coke out called "bath salts". I find it funny that they are trying to make the punishment for the synthetic worse than the punishment of the actual drugs they mimic
