Controversial Bill Aims to Make Pot a State Issue

WASHINGTON (AP) - Two House members have introduced a bill that would remove marijuana from the list of federal controlled substances and cede to the states enforcement of laws governing pot.

The legislation would eliminate marijuana-specific penalties under federal law, but would maintain a ban on transporting marijuana across state lines. It would allow individuals to grow and sell marijuana in states that chose to make it legal.

The bill was introduced Thursday by Democrat Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Republican Ron Paul of Texas. Paul is running for the GOP presidential nomination.

Frank said he's not advocating marijuana use, but believes that criminal prosecution is a waste of resources and an intrusion on personal freedom.

The bill has no chance of passing the Republican-controlled House.

Never happen.
These are the things they do to throw the pot culture a bone.

The drug companies have too much stroke to allow free medication to be made legal.
Bummer.

Would be a step forward if we COULD pass something like this and end decades of arbitrary, ignorant, criminalization of THC.

Would clear out the jails for real criminals and take some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ out of the Mexican Cartels' pockets.

I'm all for legalizing everything... no one should be branded a felon for choosing to put something into their body, but they should receive extra punishment for committing a crime while high.

Indicted Marijuana Provider Warns Others

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A medical marijuana provider indicted on federal drug charges is warning other caregivers to shut down their businesses or they'll be next.

Jason Burns of Helena says that federal agents told him before his arraignment Thursday that the Department of Justice plans to indict every Montana caregiver raided this spring.

U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Jessica Fehr says she cannot comment on whether criminal charges are pending against other providers.

Queen City Caregivers, operated by Burns and Jesse Leland, was among more than two dozen medical marijuana providers raided in March and April. They and Josh Schultz, owner of Natural Medicine, are the first to be indicted on criminal charges related to those raids.

Burns says he is being unjustly punished for something the state of Montana said he could legally do.
