Belgian Twins Choose Euthanasia

Marc and Eddy Verbessem, 45, were both born deaf and sought to end their lives after learning they would also imminently go blind.

Having spent their entire lives together, sharing an apartment and working as cobblers, the brothers told doctors they could not bear the thought of not being able to see each other.

The pair were euthanised by lethal injection by doctors at Brussels University Hospital on December 14. “They were very happy. It was a relief to see the end of their suffering,” supervising doctor David Dufour told RTL television news.

Euthanasia is legal in Belgium, requiring those who seek it to convince a doctor and judges that they are suffering unbearable pain. The twins’ case was unusual because they were not in physical pain or terminally ill.

I am personally happy for them. We dont allow our pets to suffer. Why should we?

Re: Belgian Twins Choose Euthanasia

This is how it should be worldwide, why are we forced to live even if we are terminally ill? If euthanasia was legal here in the UK i think i would spend a lot less time worrying about how much i am going to suffer when my time comes

Re: Belgian Twins Choose Euthanasia

At least one country has chose to do the right thing and legalize this. Why should people who are dying from cancer with no hope of survival be left to live out the rest of their pain filled existence, or people in comas who will never wake back up?

Re: Belgian Twins Choose Euthanasia

I read about this on abc, cbs, or somewhere the other day. Belgium is considering passing legislation ( or whatever ) that would allow small children and the elderly to be euthanized if their families agree! That I do NOT agree with, in fact, it sounds frightening. How about you all?

I agree with you, that sounds stupid as fuck, it's one thing to be terminally ill and knowing that you want to end your life because you know if you stay alive for a few more months you will suffer greatly, but to have a family vote on whether or not they want to have their child or old parents euthanized seems fucked up. It should be the decision of the individual person, not others.

I'd agree but then what about this case?

The miracle baby who will never walk, speak or read, born after family refused to terminate pregnancy despite three per cent survival rate

Should she suffer too? Of course its easier if one has a will that would give instructions, but for infants there is no possible way. Though I'd agree that this shouldnt get out of hand and needs to be strictly controlled.

Re: Belgian Twins Choose Euthanasia

When I first saw this headline, I thought it was about infants or toddlers and the mother chose to end their lives.

I believe an adult should be able to die if he or she decides to do so, assuming they have the mental capacity to make that decision.

There was a show on tv about an elderly man who was ill and wanted to die.

He signed paperwork, a doctor gave him a drug, and the man allowed his story to be filmed. They talked with his wife who became his widow.

If memory serves, she thought his wish should be fulfilled.
