The E.coli outbreak behind 31 deaths was caused by tainted beansprouts, investigators confirmed yesterday.
Experts in Germany tracked the bug from ailing victims to 26 restaurants and cafes - all of which shared the same supplier.
It turned out to be the organic farm blamed and shut down last Thursday in Bienenbuettel, Lower Saxony.
A spokesman for Germany's consumer protection agency said: "It was like a crime thriller where you have to find the bad guy."
Hours after the link was made, traces of the killer strain were found in a pack of beansprouts from the farm found in a family's bin.
Two members of the household had fallen ill after eating them.
Germany has lifted the alert against eating cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce - all earlier suspected of causing the outbreak which has killed 30 Germans and a Swede. Thousands across Europe have fallen ill.
