Lights went out in downtown Memphis tonight. Beale street and surrounding areas plunged into darkness. Violent robbings ensue and a good time was had by all.

And the manhole covers shot up flames leaping from underground fire. More fun.

Downtown blackout shuts down Beale Street

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Darkness descended on downtown Memphis Friday night when the power went out, followed swiftly by a flurry of movement as police, firefighters and MLGW crews responded.

Beale Street and the surrounding area lost power at 8:35 p.m. Friday. A couple emergency lights were set up, and police directed traffic.

Power also went out in the South Main area and Union Avenue downtown.

People who gathered around police cars at Second and Beale told us they heard a big boom and the power went out.

MLGW says part of a substation went down, and crews are trying to restore power. Call 544-6500 if you don’t have power.

Manhole covers on Second Street also dislodged, with flames and smoke coming out, due to an underground fire. The air needs to clear before a crew can go down.

Crews investigated if the problem is a gas leak, but determined it was not. They tell us the issue is in the electrical corridor due to a blown fuse.

A little after 11 p.m., crews at GE Patterson and Second prepared to send a charge through underground power lines. The charge will spark a small fire, so they’ll know where the bad line is located.

Firefighters suited up in case anything went wrong, but then crews learned most of their equipment was fried. So before they can even begin fixing the problem, they have to fix their equipment so they can send the charge to locate it.

Police are urging people to leave the area for their own safety, as it will likely be several hours before power is restored.

Reporter Jessica Gertler was told people were stuck in elevators at the Peabody Hotel and the Westin.

With customers leaving, businesses say they lost a lot of money. One couple who was at BB King’s all evening had a tab worth several hundred dollars when the power went out.

Businesses are worried people won’t return tomorrow to pay up, and that their food will spoil.

The outage isn’t appearing MLGW’s outage map because downtown is on its own grid.

If traffic lights are out and police aren’t directing traffic, treat the intersection as a stop.

MLGW headquarters is also without power. They do not know when power will be restored:

MLGW does not have the number of customers out but we do have the geographical area which is mostly the southern part of downtown. Once the damage is isolated, then we will start bringing the network back up. As of right now, there is no estimated time of restoration.

WREG has spoken with police, firefighters and MLGW. They tell us this is an isolated incident due to an underground fire that’s contained to a small area, which impacted much of downtown.

They had a few images at that page, but they were largely blurry scheiße.
