Banksy is Turning His 'Dismaland' Park into a Shelter for Refugees
![]() ![]() Coming soon… Dismaland Calais. All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters. No online tickets will be available. http://dismaland.co.uk/ Banksy is turning his 'Dismaland' park into a shelter for refugees By Lindsey Bever September 28 Pieces from Banksy's Dismaland "bemusement park" — an art installation that has drawn viewers to its decrepit castle and Cinderella wreckage — will soon be used to create a shelter for migrants and refugees. The street artist announced Monday that the installation in seaside Weston-super-Mare in England is being dismantled. Materials from its structures will be used to build shelters near Calais, France, in a camp called "the jungle." "Coming soon … Dismaland Calais," Banksy wrote in a message on the exhibit's Web site. "All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters." The message was accompanied by a photo illustration depicting Dismaland's dilapidated castle surrounded by tents. The theme park, which closed over the weekend, opened last month to recognize "inequality and impending catastrophe," Banksy said in an interview posted on the site. Officials said the exhibition pulled in more than 150,000 paying visitors during its run, earning $30 million, according to BBC News. "This is not a street art show," Banksy said. "It’s modeled on those failed Christmas parks that pop up every December — where they stick some antlers on an Alsatian dog and spray fake snow on a skip. It’s ambitious, but it’s also crap. I think there’s something very poetic and British about all that." More than 3,000 people from Syria, Libya and Eritrea have made their way to the Calais camp, according to the Guardian. Once there, migrants have tried to rush the Channel Tunnel to find a way into the United Kingdom. The New York Times described it as a "desperate scene playing out each night and day in Calais, with migrants trying to vault fences or cut their way through them and climb onto trains or into trucks going across the Channel to England." The pursuit has turned deadly at times. More than a dozen people have died trying to rush the tunnel this year, according to the Guardian. On Sunday, the newspaper reported: A senior UN official has called on the UK and France to open a permanent centre in Calais where people wanting to claim asylum in Britain can have their cases heard without risking their lives trying to cross the Channel. Peter Sutherland, the United Nations special representative on migration, said he was “sickened” by the conditions in the Jungle after a visit last week to the camp, which is home to more than 3,000 people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and east Africa. He called on both governments to do more to address the situation before more people died. |
