A baby boy has been treated for dehydration after being alone for days next to his dead mother in a flat in Melbourne, Australia.

Police conducting a welfare check found a 25-year-old woman's body beside the 15-month-old baby who officers say just wanted to be held. He had been been there for up to three days.

Police do not yet know how the woman died and are waiting for the results of a post-mortem.

The baby was taken to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital where a spokeswoman said the child had been released in a "satisfactory" condition.

Police say they are not treating the woman's death as suspicious.

The boy was found in his pyjamas close to his mother on the lounge floor. When picked up by officers he was reported to be clingy and would not let go.

His mother was reportedly fully clothed and had no visible signs of injury.

News.com.au quoted neighbour Brenton Dohse saying he was sad to hear his neighbour had died leaving her son whom "she doted on".

"If she died on Monday and he was in there alone ... probably in his nappy ... that's really sad," he said.

"She absolutely doted on her little boy. She loved him."

He said he believed the woman had lived in the house for 12 months after moving from Tasmania and had expressed plans to return to the state.

"She didn't have many visitors. She often walked past while I was out doing some gardening and we'd have a quick chat, mostly about kids. She was nice to talk to," he said.

I've actually experienced this situation in real life. So very tragic.

Cause of death of our family friend was something related to a previous medical condition. Died while napping on the couch. Baby was in his crib. Husband came home from his trip to find that. It was quite horrific.

My stepbrother was 4 when his mom od'd he spent five days with her trying to wake her and he made her food...the neighbor noticed an odd smell..poor child is messed up to this day and he is 19 now.
