Australia's Surfer Wright's Historic 'Perfect Double'

Australia's Owen Wright has etched his name into the record books, becoming just the seventh surfer ever to snare a perfect heat score, with two 10 point rides at the Fiji Pro.

Wright was masterful in the powerful 3m-plus waves at Cloudbreak, where he could do no wrong in his round five victory over compatriot Adam Melling.

He claimed the 10-point rides on his second and third waves of the heat with 24 minutes still remaining.

On his first wave, the 25-year-old faded off his bottom turn before rising mid-face to plant himself underneath the folding lip.

He rode the barrel through several sections, then emerged and gauged a radical layback snap before slotting back in the tube and flying out again.

His second ride was a bigger, more critical tube where he disappeared for several seconds and was still riding the foam ball when the wave spat, before he emerged with his arms raised in triumph.

Such was Wright's dominance he nailed two other rides that scored 8.93 and 8.77, which would have been enough to win most other heats on the day.

Melling also surfed well to post a heat total of 17.70, including a 9.83.

The goofy-footer follows in the footsteps of Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, Jeremy Flores and Shane Beschen, who are the only other surfers to snare a perfect 20-point heat.

The win sent Wright through to the quarter finals, where he was drawn to face 2012 world champion Parkinson, who also claimed a 10-point ride in a non-elimination round four win over Wright and three-time world champ Mick Fanning.

And then a shark swoops in and eats him.

Re: Australia's Surfer Wright's Historic 'Perfect Double'

Australia's Owen Wright has shown lightning does strike twice, claiming two 10-point rides for a second perfect heat score two days in a row to win the Fiji Pro.

Just 24 hours after becoming only the fifth surfer to score a perfect 20-point heat total, the 25-year-old repeated the act to beat compatriot Julian Wilson in faultless 2m-3m waves at Cloudbreak.

Wright showed he was the king of the fables reef break with back-to-back 10s in the final to leave fans and rivals in awe as he outpointed Wilson 20 to 7.84.

Both rides featured long tubes, but his second 10 was more like a 15 as he pumped through numerous sections during a 100m plus barrel.

It came after he had scored 9.60 on his second wave and followed his 20-point heat to beat fellow Australian Adam Melling in round five.

Wright was buzzing as he spoke of his performance moments after the final ended.

"Oh man…something special was happening out there for me," he said. "I was just loving it.

"I can't believe it. To finish with a couple of 10s – that's a dream come true right there, to win here.

"I haven't won a contest for a long time and man it feels good."

The win comes after Wright notched just the seventh ever 20-point heat on Monday and places him alongside 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and 2012 world champ Joel Parkinson as the only surfers to twice nab perfect heat scores.

It was the first time a surfer has ever hit the 20-point mark twice in the same event.

His victory caps an amazing comeback after the NSW south coast surfer was forced to miss virtually the entire 2013 season with a back injury.

Australia's Owen Wright has etched his name into the record books becoming just the seventh surfer ever to snare a perfect heat score, with two 10 points rides in the Fiji Pro.

He has now vaulted into third spot on the World Surf League rankings behind Brazilian pair Adriano De Souza and Filipe Toledo.
