Australia - Missing Tiny, Deadly Radioactive Capsule Spurs Nationwide Search
Good job. "A tiny cylinder of radioactive material is missing along a stretch of highway in Western Australia after apparently falling off the back of a truck. According to health officials, the cylinder is very small and very dangerous. The cylinder is about 8mm long and 6mm wide. According to officials, a bolt in the back of the truck loosened from the vibrations of the road and the cylinder slipped out. “It’s a small silver cylinder,” Andrew Robertson, WA’s Chief Health Officer said during a press conference. “It does emit a reasonable amount of radiation.” The capsule is a cesium-137 ceramic source. This is a standardized piece of equipment typically used in industrial mining operations According to Robertson, it would emit the equivalent of 10 x-rays into the human body every hour into someone who was near it. It’s about the same amount of radiation the average person receives just walking around in the course of a year, but delivered in an hour."

![]() Aborigines may have picked it up and dropped it into the Coke bottle they worship. They would have no way of knowing the danger as the media releases were from pink skinned people in Aussie and Aussie sign language. |

Re: Australia - Missing Tiny, Deadly Radioactive Capsule Spurs Nationwide Search
I read that the radioactive source was placed in a wooden box that was then screwed to a wooden pallet and placed on top of a flatbed truck. That sure would not fly with the NRC here. The whole time the source was in the back of the truck it would have been emitting radiation to the truck occupants and anyone alongside that vehicle.

Reuters Missing radioactive capsule found in Australia Wed, February 1, 2023, 5:24 AM PST A tiny radioactive capsule smaller than a coin that was lost in the vast Australian Outback has been found, authorities said on Wednesday (February 1). The discovery came after a week-long search involving around 100 people along a 870 mile stretch of highway, officials said. Here's Western Australian Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson. “When you consider the scope of the research area, locating this object was a monumental challenge. The search groups have quite literally found the needle in the haystack. “ The Cesium-137 capsule, which is used by Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto to measure iron ore feed, was lost in transit more than two weeks ago. The search team used portable detection equipment to find the capsule, which was located about 6.5 feet from the side of the road in a remote area far from any community. Rio Tinto Ltd (Iron Ore) chief executive Simon Trott apologized for the loss on Wednesday. “I would be happy to reimburse the cost of the search. Of course that ultimately is a matter for the state government. There will be a full investigation, we’ll fully cooperate with the investigation." He added that the company would put in place additional controls to prevent the situation happening again. |
