The aunt was later arrested for unrelated crimes (she'd failed to appear in court on charges of theft and driving with a suspended license).

A woman whose two toddlers died in a house fire while she left them home alone has been indicted by a grand jury in their deaths.

Melodia Dunn, 22, was charged Tuesday in the deaths of Ladereon Dunn, 3, and Catereon Dunn, 2. She is being held on $250,000 bond.

Dunn is facing two counts of aggravated child neglect or endangerment and two counts of reckless homicide.

Aggravated child neglect carries a possible penalty of 15-25 years in prison; it is also a non-parolable offense. Reckless homicide is punishable by 2-4 years in prison.

"Time and time again we see incidents like this in our community. Obviously, it's very disturbing to me as it is to most citizens," Dist. Atty. Gen. Bill Gibbons said Tuesday night. "We're going to do our job and prosecute individuals aggressively for these kinds of acts. Do I hope it will serve as a deterrent? Sure."

This incident began around 3 p.m. Oct. 19 when a fire erupted in a duplex at 1240 Effie. The two boys had been locked in the house while their mother and aunt went shopping.

Neighbors tried to fight through the flames, but weren't able to reach the boys.

Ladereon died later that day, succumbing to carbon-monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation.

Catereon died Oct. 26 of complications from carbon-monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation.

The incident sparked outrage across Memphis, particularly after the boys' aunt told news outlets she didn't see anything wrong with leaving them home alone, then complained about her food stamp card being lost in the fire.

Marilyn Wilson, 50, was later arrested for failing to appear in court on 3-year-old charges of theft and driving with a suspended license.

Authorities moved methodically in pressing charges.

"I was aware of the outrage that was out there, but our office isn't dictated by public sentiment or demand," Asst. Dist. Atty. Scot Bearup said. "We felt as though her conduct was criminal. It'll be up to a jury of her peers to determine if a law has been broken."

As an aunt, I would NEVER leave two babies alone for a minute! They're quick and they're curious!

I wouldn't be surprised if the incubator and her relative set the fire and left them there to die.

People who are too lazy or drugged or drunk to use birth control get pregnant so easily.

Decent people who would kill for a baby and can't get pregnant for whatever reason, spend thousands of dollars to try to have one!
