Trapped passengers’ terror as Chinese arsonist sets bus alight, leaving 33 people critically injured

• Police say they believe the motive for the attack was terrorism

Dozens of commuters and tourists were badly burned when an arsonist poured paint thinner on the floor of a packed bus and set it alight.
Police are blaming terrorists for the blaze which engulfed the No.7 bus carrying 80 people at a crossing between Dongpo Road and Qingchun Road in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.
Many of the passengers aboard the bus were tourists from other provinces and cities outside Hangzhou. Three children are among the injured, police said.

video clip taken from the bus's CCTV camera and released by Chinese police shows the firestarter suddenly leaning over in his seat and apparently tipping a liquid out.
The flick of his lighter's flint wheel alerts other passengers to the danger, but they are unable to stop him or escape before the spark catches.

The inferno quickly spread through the entire bus. Thirty-three people were injured. Police said the suspected arsonist was the most seriously burned after he was trapped inside the bus by the fire.
Others would have been more seriously hurt, police said, but passing motorists were able to douse them with fire extinguishers as they ran from the bus in flames.
Some of those in nearby cars also smashed windows on the bus to help people get out. Police said of the 28 still in hospital, 24 had been seriously hurt.
Police spokesman De Chuang said: 'We are still trying to investigate the motive but we suspect terrorism.
'According to the CCTV images the man got on the bus at the Lingyin Temple bus station shortly before the afternoon rush hour.
'We still do not know his identity and at the moment he's too badly hurt to question.'
Lingyin Temple is a famous tourist attraction in the scenic city, known for its picturesque West Lake.

Can't see the back of the bus, but it could've been articulated or even bi-articulated, in which case a seating capacity of up to 200 is possible.
