Seems like she just meant to keep them secured if you have children around, hell... unless i'm carrying or using any of mine they are stored in a locked cabinet.
My parents did the same thing, I never had access to them till i demonstrated the maturity and ability to safely handle them.

Poor old fuck probably lived alone for so long without any children that it never occurred to him, the 3yr old probably thought it was a toy and was just 'pretending' to shoot his brother with it.

I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it. I've got the problem with the mommys of the world always whining that guns should be locked up, unloaded, and in a lock box, or safe. I get it, but since you can't change the world, how about changing the child. Teach the kid not to touch guns, no matter where they might find them. And if they do find one, to tell an adult. This kid was old enough. I did it with my daughters and I never had an issue. I also don't like leaving a gun lying around and believe that you should carry the handgun on your hip. You always know where it is if you wear it. If a gun is emptyand locked up it's worthless.
