Apparently Moses Was High On Drugs When He Was On Mount Sinai

Quote:
An Israeli professor of cognitive philosophy has claimed that Moses was high on drugs when he received the Ten Commandments upon Mount Sinai.

According to ABC News, professor Benny Shanon wrote in the British Journal Time and Mind that, given the environment, there is reason to believe Moses was indeed hallucinating when he allegedly heard the voice of God.

Shanon, of Hebrew University, cited two plants commonly found in the Sinai Peninsula that are well-known for inducing psychedelic hallucinations. The component responsible for this natural capability is traditionally mixed into a mind-altering drink known as ayahuasca.

Quote:
“As far as Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don’t believe, or a legend, which I don’t believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effects of narcotics,” he told Israel Radio earlier today.
The Book of Exodus mentions thunder, lightning and a blaring trumpet when describing Moses’ divine encounter. These sounds and visions, Shanon says, are classic hallucinations of those under the influence of ayahuasca.

The professor believes that the sight of the burning bush was also a drug-induced hallucination.

Quote:
“In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation,” he wrote, “the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings.”
Shanon also cited personal experience to back up his claims. He admitted to taking some of these natural hallucinogens while in the Amazon in 1991.

Quote:
“I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations,” Shanon said.
ABC News reports that the initial reaction to this theory from Israel’s community of orthodox rabbis was “less than enthusiastic.”

Orthodox rabbi Yuval Sherlow, speaking on Israeli radio, said: “The Bible is trying to convey a very profound event. We have to fear not for the fate of the biblical Moses, but for the fate of science.”

Re: Apparently Moses Was High On Drugs When He Was On Mount Sinai

There is LSD available in the states, so does that mean any odd phenomenon is due to psychedelic drugs? People don't need hallucinations to enable religious hysteria. Benny Hinn, anyone? This is silly. Let's just start armchair diagnosing all of Christianity's characters with no data. Let's start a theory that Noah was a paranoid schizophrenic. World's first doomsday prepper, ark-style. Goliath was on bath salts. Lucifer had daddy/authority issues stemming from a skewed family power dynamic. And since the Bible doesn't say David DIDN'T wear pink sun-dresses, let's assume he did. He DID like to sing and dance and hang out with his male armor-bearer... ehhh? ehhh?
Not to mention the idea that if we believe hallucinogens convinced him that he talked to a burning bush, how do we explain the story of him interacting with a king (pharoah), or the plagues described as affecting many people? The hallucinogen really only explains the burning bush and God exchange, not any of the other supernatural phenomenon that would have been witnessed by many, many others. This sounds like a stoner theory that is getting too much credit. Delving into the theory a quarter of an inch more causes it all to unravel. The theory that Moses was the first superstar magician (water to blood, staff to serpent, predicting plagues, etc.) makes it way further down the tracks before de-railing.
