Fisherman Leon Bekker was fined £8,500 after posing for a newspaper with the endangered great white he had just killed.

It was the first prosecution in 22 years since the predators became protected in South Africa.

For years anglers who reeled them in simply claimed that they had not meant to catch one.

But Mossel Bay magistrates in the Southern Cape ruled that anyone using heavy fishing tackle and big bait in a known great white shark area was guilty of “hunting and killing the endangered species”.

It did not help that Bekker posed with his prey and had killed great whites before.

Experts welcomed the ruling as good news for the increasingly rare fish, which are vulnerable to extinction.

One fisheries official said: “We are certain that the sentence will serve as a deterrent.”
