Re: Amy Van Dyken, Olympic Gold Medalist Swimmer, Breaks Her Back, Shares Story
I was walking on the sidewalk and a semi truck pulling 2 empty flat bed trailers, was going a little too fast to properly stop. The trailers jack knifed up onto the sidewalk and hit me in the back. What wasn't covered by insurance(very little) was paid for by the trucking company. I was in the spinal injury unit/rehab, after I healed some from the other injuries in the respiratory icu(ribs/lungs) -2 women from horse accidents (one neck, one back) -A guy who was hit on his bicycle by a car of illegals(good luck with insurance -A guy who fell out of bed and broke his neck -A truck driver who was getting dressed in his truck and hit the back of his neck. Laid there for days before someone found him. -A woman who got a spinal infection and woke up paralyzed(OMG!) -1 woman who was in a car accident (neck) -1 guy who was in a skiing accident(as was my doctor, who was in a chair. (Back)) (neck) -1 guy who was riding his bicycle and someone opened their car door - he went through the window and the lower half of his face had to be sewn back on(neck) 1 guy who was hit while on a bicycle(neck) 1 guy who was injured by a bull(in a rodeo) (back)He was about 60 or older! and a few more who I don't know what happened to. I think they were mostly car related. Being there made me realize that my injury and situation could be so much worse. I can deal with this. I'm grateful for what I have. |

Up here it's available as extended health coverage, i.e. dentistry, eyeglasses, meds, anything basic provincial medicare doesn't cover. Since I'm on disability (read: piss poor) I have provincial PharmaCare coverage and get a discount on eye exams, glasses and see a dentist who takes disability patients. Remind me again why some Americans think they're superior? |

Yeah, from what I have heard it is pretty bad. There is a few fundraisers for him. I Mother Earth even did a little tribute to raise some money for him. He is still in the hospital they are trying to get back to bc to be closer to family.

Wow, talk about being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. That must have been so scary. I love your attitude. No matter how bad things get, I always remember, there are people who have it much worse. Such an amazing outlook you have. |

Amy is making amazing progress! She did 50 push ups! Interview with Matt Lauer. Fellow patient and Denver CrossFit coach Kevin Ogar, who was paralyzed in January of 2014. Working hard!! She was excited to bake cookies and do a wheelie! Out to lunch with her hubby and family. |

atv's are very dangerous, the boxing club where i train just had a very talented fighter die in an accident involving one. I've also heard of another person dying in an atv accident and a third who was seriously injured in one. Man, these things are really causing some damage lately. |

“Life has three rules: Paradox, Humor, and Change. - Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste your time trying to figure it out. - Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure - Change: Know that nothing ever stays the same.” ― Dan Millman, What an amazing woman |

I love this girl!! She is really rocking her therapy!! She is determined to "run" in a marathon in a year...it would be so awesome to see her accomplish that goal! Jake drew a picture for her a few weeks ago...& it's now her cover photo on her FB!! |
