American Hero
After days of mourning, funeral set for 1st female Philly firefighter killed in line of duty PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A funeral is set for the first female firefighter in Philadelphia to die in the line of duty. Services were scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in Philadelphia for Joyce Craig, who died Tuesday fighting a house fire. She became trapped in the basement of a burning home where an elderly woman was later rescued. The mother of two served 11 years with the city fire department. Black bunting was hanging from firehouses across the city, and flags have been lowered to half-staff as hundreds of firefighters from Philadelphia and beyond prepare to pay their last respects. Services were to be held at Batchelor Brothers Funeral Services, where a viewing was held Friday night. A second viewing was planned for Saturday morning just before the funeral |

Re: American Hero
Firefighters are very brave heroes who often risk their lives to save others, it's a honor for me to work with some of them: this one gave away her own life, I guess she's eligible for posthumous Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor. |

Re: American Hero
My father was a firefighter. He had been there for 28yrs when he retired. A similar situation happened back in 2014 with a female firefighter here. The last two pics are of my Dad. He is the one on the right in the last pic. They're not very good quality because it's a pic of a pic. |

Re: American Hero
Ms. Craig was the mother of a 16 year old son, Mekhi, and a 16 month old daughter, Laylani. There is some question as to what happened with her device that signaled she was in trouble. Her team didn't realize she wasn't with them until they were out of the house. She did send a distress call after helping an elderly person out, but, asphyxiated and was found in the basement and was unresponsive at the scene. She was taken to a hospital with police and fire escorts. Firefighters the news spoke with at the funeral two days ago came from Washington, DC, Delaware, and Missouri to pay their respects. |
