Afghan Police Sniper Shoots Down Taliban ‘suicide Eagle’
Afghan police shot and detonated an eagle-like bird which appears to have been equipped with a form of avian ‘suicide vest’ – in what appears to be an alarming new tactic by the Taliban. Officers spotted that the bird had an antenna in Afghanistan’s Faryab province – and immediately shot it, causing an explosion raining debris on the area. Major General Abdul Nabi Ilham told NBC News, ‘We are gathering all the stuff, but found parts of what looks to be GPS and a small camera.’ There was also ‘suspicious metal stuff’, scattered around, Ilham said. Police have speculated that the bird was on some kind of surveillance mission before it detonated its deadly payload. Using animals as ‘suicide bombers’ is not unknown in warfare – the Soviets reportedly trained dogs to run underneath German tanks in World War II, wearing backpacks full of explosives. The American military also faced controversy over a programme which aimed to train dolphins to clear undersea mines. Islamic militants Hamas also reportedly loaded donkeys with explosives before releasing them towards targets. Is it just me or does it seem strange that a secret bird bomb would have a giant numbered tag and be wearing what looks like a wildlife custom radio tracker? Look close at that bird...no not the middle eastern guy...the real bird. I'm certainly no ornithologist, but that doesn't look like a bird of prey and certainly not an eagle. It looks like some kind of a roadrunner or other ground bird. Could this be a joke article? Does anyone know?
