Veteran character actor James Handy was fatally stabbed on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at his home in Tarzana, Los Angeles. He was 81 years old.

Authorities have arrested Michael Gledhill, the 44-year-old son of Handy's girlfriend, on suspicion of murder.

LAPD officers responded to a 9:30 a.m. call about a stabbing in the 19200 block of Erwin Street, where they found Handy in the front yard with a chest wound. He was declared deceased at a hospital.

Michael Gledhill, who lived at the home with his mother and Handy, turned himself in to police, telling dispatchers, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin".

Gledhill was booked at Van Nuys Jail on a murder charge with bail set at $2 million. The LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating the incident as a domestic dispute.

Handy was a respected character actor with a career spanning over 50 years and roughly 150 credits. His agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, remembered him as a "talented, humble or gracious client and friend".

His extensive work included roles in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Jumanji (1995), Arachnophobia (1990), The Rocketeer (1991), Logan (2017), NYPD Blue, and Alias.
