84 Year Old Woman Attacked With Hammer (28 November 2011)

An 84-year-old woman has been attacked with a hammer by a female robber in a Yorkshire Dales market town.

The victim suffered head injuries in the attack in public toilets near the Posthorn Tea and Coffee Shop in Leyburn Market Place on Monday morning.

She had just withdrawn money from her bank and police said the robber fled with "a large amount of cash".

The suspect is a white woman in her 40s with mid-length brown hair. She was wearing a burgundy winter coat.

Her victim, who suffered head injuries, was treated by ambulance staff at the scene before being taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where she was in a stable condition.

'Horrific attack'

As well as being struck with a hammer she was also hit with her own walking stick, police added.

Det Insp Andrea Kell, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "This is a horrific attack on an elderly woman in broad daylight and is it vital that we find the person responsible.

"I am appealing to any members of the public who were in the market place today [Monday] to contact us if they believe they can assist the investigation, or anyone who knows who carried out this shocking attack to contact us as a matter of urgency."

She said the victim was hit on the head four times before her handbag was taken. The bag was later found in a separate block of public toilets near the cinema with the contents missing.

maybe she'll tell stories in 10 years about the time she got attacked with her stick, n have a giggle about it then, and she'll be able to use the classic line "it wasnt funny at the time, but i can laugh about it now"

I don't think she will be laughing about anything for a long time, I don't suppose she will get her money back either, there is nothing amusing about this story at all.

Leyburn hammer attack accused appears in court A woman has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a hammer attack on an 84-year-old in the Yorkshire Dales.

The female victim suffered head injuries during the attack in public toilets in Leyburn Market Place on Monday morning.

Magistrates in Northallerton have remanded a 47-year-old local woman in custody.

The woman is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on 8 December
