LAS CRUCES, NM (AP) - January 29, 2013 (WPVI) -- A New Mexico woman and her boyfriend locked up an 8-year-old girl with developmental disabilities in a wooden cage, then left her alone while they headed out to watch a movie, police said Tuesday.

Cindy Patriarchias and Edmond Gonzales took her three children to an elementary school to watch the movie on Friday, a police report said. Patriarchias' estranged husband called police when he arrived at the school and learned that the 8-year-old girl was unattended at the mobile home.

Police waited for an hour for Patriarchias and Gonzales to return before they could enter. Officers discovered a large homemade wooden cage in the corner of a bedroom with the girl inside. The cage had two latches on the door, a baby crib's mattress inside and was about 2 ½ feet wide and 4 feet inches tall, police said in a statement.

The girl didn't appear to have any physical injuries, police said. She was placed under the care of New Mexico's child-protection agency.

A police spokesman said Patriarchias had been trying to adopt the girl but hadn't been able to reach the girl's birth mother to get her consent. The girl suffers from microcephaly - a condition that gives people an abnormally small head.

Patriarchias, 33, has been charged with negligently causing child abuse. Gonzales, 37, was charged with negligently permitting child abuse. Court records indicated that they appeared in court Monday but didn't enter pleas.

Patriarchias and Gonzales were being held $25,000 cash-only bonds. It was unclear if they had hired attorneys.

Microcephaly is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which the circumference of the head is more than three standard deviations smaller than average for the person's age and sex. Microcephaly may be congenital or it may develop in the first few years of life. The disorder may stem from a wide variety of conditions that cause abnormal growth of the brain, or from syndromes associated with chromosomal abnormalities. Two copies of a loss-of-function mutation in one of the microcephalin genes causes primary microcephaly.
In general, life expectancy for individuals with microcephaly is reduced and the prognosis for normal brain function is poor. The prognosis varies depending on the presence of associated abnormalities.

They were mentally challenged. Schiltzie was a male, but, wore dresses because he wore a diaper.

Elvira and Jenny Lee Snow, also from, "Freaks", had the same condition. I always thought there were twins, but, I do not know that for sure.

Me, too! The people amazed me! Zip and Pip are Elvira and Jenny Lee.

The prince man with no arms and legs was married and fathered 6 or 8 children.

Johnny Eck/Eckman was a nice looking guy. He had a full bodied twin.

Johnny lived in Baltimore, MD, until he was attacked in his home and never went out again. I think he died in his 70's.

I have the movie on dvd and have watched it many, many times. Usually alone. It's hard enough to get people to watch a black and white movie, let alone a movie like this.

Hmm...Imdb says Olga Baclanova died at 78. Maybe you are thinking of a different actress?

Perhaps I did have the wrong actress. I swore I read that. Yesterday, I saw Joan Rivers listed as being in born in 1968. Turned out to be her daughter, lol!

I have the movie on video. Even if people don't like black and white, they should appreciate the things all of the people in that movie could do with what they were and were not born with!

Amazing how they used other body parts to do what most of us take for granted!

The real, "freak", was what we consider to be, "normal."
