8 Dead, 19 Hurt As Bus Rams Roadside Slope in Samal, Philippines
SunStar, Davao City, Tuesday, October 30, 2012 A bus overturned after ramming a roadside slope in Kaputian district in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) Tuesday morning, leaving eight people dead and 19 others injured. The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Km. 16 in Barangay Poblacion, Kaputian district, the authorities said. The Island City Express bus was on its way to Kaputian from Peñaplata when it encountered mechanical problem upon reaching a curve at sitio 20 in Barangay Poblacion, causing the driver to lost control of the brake and hit the slope. The driver and four passengers died on the spot, while three others died while undergoing treatment at Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City. Superintendent Roland Agohob, chief of the Igacos police, said those injured were immediately brought to SPMC, where they are now undergoing treatment. Some of the injured are in critical condition. More @ http://www.sunstar.com.ph/breaking-n...e-samal-250513 --- This tragic incident happened today near the birthplace of my wife, and sad to say, the driver of the bus was one of our witnesses in our wedding when we got married there in August this year. My wife also tells me that according to postings on FB, the death toll is now up to 6 with 20 people injured. We always ride this bus-line when we're there visiting (it's the only one in this place), and I've almost been waiting for something like this to happen, looking at those run-down, poorly maintained buses, always crammed full of people.
