Divorce Granted For 70-year-old Man Who Married 15-year-old girl

A Saudi Arabian man wed the girl, and then claimed her family cheated him out of the huge dowry he paid them.

CNN reported Tuesday the man paid the girl’s parents the equivalent of $20,000 to secure the union. According to CNN, the man also said he believes the girl is actually 25 and not 15. NDTV reported Monday that the man was 90.

The man would not give his name to CNN, but did claim that the girl’s family has ripped him off and taken her back. According to CNN, the girl may have run away after a dispute with the man.

**Couple Now Divorced**

On Thursday, CNN reported that Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission told the news agency a divorce has been granted in the case.

On Wednesday, Dr. Bandar Alaiban, the commission's president, said a meeting had taken place with the parents, man and the girl.

“A divorce has taken place,” Alaiban told CNN, “and the dispute has now been resolved amicably.”

Human rights groups, activists angry

One well-known activist, Noon Arabia, took to Twitter Monday, saying, “#ChildMarriage is a violation of human rights.” Saudi Arabia currently has no law regarding the minimum age for marriage. CNN reported that some groups, including the Human Rights Commission, are pushing to establish a minimum age for marriage in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi National Association for Human Rights told CNN that the age difference makes the circumstances of the marriage suspect. The group said it seems like the girl was sold rather than married and that her parents should be held accountable, according to CNN.

While many of the specifics remain unclear, the incident has sparked outrage online, with users posting to Twitter under #ChildMarriage to decry the older man as well as the girl’s family.
