7-year Old Critical After Being Shot in Head at Friend’s Home in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. — A 7-year-old boy was shot in the head at a home and transported to a hospital in Aurora late Thursday afternoon, the Aurora Police Department said.

Police said six children ages 7 to 12 were playing with a gun when it happened. The boy who was shot did not live at the home. The boy was out of surgery at Children’s Hospital on Thursday night and is in critical condition.

Police said there were no adults in the home at the time of the shooting, which happened in the 1000 block of North Vaughn Street just before 4 p.m. Police said the shooting appeared to be accidental and they are awaiting a search warrant to go inside the home as part of the investigation.

As news of what happened inside the home made it’s way outside, sadness was inescapable, but not everyone was shocked.

“It just makes sense,” neighbor Chris Luther said. “It makes sense what happened because there’s a lack of supervision.”

Luther said he knows the family who lives in the home, and when he heard about the shooting, he was struck by a conversation he had four days earlier with one of the boys who was playing with the gun.

“I was in the house talking to the family and he mentioned that, ‘My dad has a gun in his room,'” Luther said. “I’m assuming that the gun is locked. I’m assuming that the gun would have several locks. That’s what I would assume, you know? So what am I supposed to do?”

Police spoke to the boy’s father. He was not under arrest, but detectives were still trying to understand how his son and his friends got their hands on the gun and what led to the gunshot.

“Nobody is here to watch that gun, that firearm, so what do you expect is going to happen? A bunch of kids in the house by themselves,” Luther said.

As a father of five kids, Luther said he’s glad he doesn’t own a gun and that he didn’t let his kids play at the house where the shooting happened.

“My kids don’t just roam around the streets. If they’re going to go to somebody’s house, they better give me a phone number or I’m going to walk over to the house first,” Luther said.

Police said the boy who was shot was in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This tragic incident is a reminder to gun owners about the importance of making sure that all firearms are properly secured and not accessible to children,” said Aurora Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Amsler.

There is no law in Aurora that guns have to be locked up, though in this case, an adult could be charged with neglect if it’s found they were not storing the gun properly with children in the house.

It amazes me that people can so freely have children and purchase weapons yet when I adopt a fucking DOG I have endless hoops I have to jump through to prove I'm fit.

Right that way when you actually NEED it to protect your life it's useless. GUN SAFTEY is the issue here hands down.
