55-gallon Drum Containing Remains Found in Building Where Woman Lived.
JERSEY CITY — Police have found what they believe are remains in a concrete-filled drum in the basement of an apartment where a missing Jersey City woman lives, authorities said tonight. "We believe it contains remains," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said tonight. "If we have human remains we don't know at this point." The 55-gallon drum was found in the basement of the same Charles Street building where Randy "Amanda" Lehrer lived with her husband, Steven Acuna, and their 11-month-old daughter before she disappeared. Lehrer, 32, was reported missing on Aug. 17, police say, after an argument with her husband. Police also said that Acuna has been uncooperative in their investigation. Acuna was not at the home today when police arrived at noon. Earlier this month a cadaver dog was used to search the family's home, but no evidence of foul play was found. Police said they had not searched the basement of the building until today. Tonight Charles Street was closed between Summit and Central avenues as police continued their investigation. Members of the police and fire departments, along with Emergency Service Unit vehicles and hazardous materials units were on the scene today. At 5:30 p.m., Medical Examiner employees arrived. "There is a significant development in the case," Police Chief Tom Comey said this afternoon, but he did not provide any more information. "I knew her from (Tommie's Diner, where Lehrer works)," said Melissa Wilderman, 18, of Bowers Street. "She used to serve me and my boyfriend. I was pregnant and she was pregnant and we used to talk. We hung out a couple of times in front of her house after she got off work. "When she went missing I couldn't believe it. I'm hoping she's alive. ... I hope it's not her." No one has been charged in Lehrer's disappearance, said DeFazio.  ·  ·  ·  · |

This reminds me of the police officer who savagely murdered his mistress with a baseball bat and placed her in a garbage can in his basement apartment.

It's just mere suspicion. The husband could be totally innocent and you guys are ready to crucify the guy. Lets just wait and see what pans out before we judge.

 True.Just find it a bit odd how she suddenly disappeared after an argument with him and he is not cooperating with the police. I'll follow this story and update it as soon as new details are available.  |
