16 people were hurt when a 33-ton aquarium containing sharks, other fish and turtles exploded at a shopping centre in Shanghai, China.

Security cameras captured the moment the giant tank burst, sending glass and fish flying into the crowd.

A man who was taking pictures of the aquarium when it broke was swept away by water.

Shoppers, store assistants and security staff suffered cuts and bruises as they were hit by pieces of 15cm-thick acrylic glass.

Three lemon sharks and dozens of small fishes and turtles were killed.

Police have begun an investigation.

"I was just walking by and heard the explosion of this water tank. I heard a bang, then water flushed out," said a witness.

"A cosmetics counter collapsed. The shop assistant was pulled out by other people".

A safety expert said: "According to experts' preliminary investigation, the main cause of the incident is that the material used to make the aquarium ruptured under low temperatures after long-time use."

The Orient shopping centre said it had no plans to rebuild the aquarium which had become a popular attraction since it was installed 2 years ago.

2 years is considered long-term use?

For shitty chinese quality products? Yes I agree.

For normal, high standard material? Thats a fucking pathetic level of quality.

Many aquariums around the world have not suffered this type of failure and have been in operation for years. Got to love shitty chinese quality manufacturing.

When I see "made in China" on any product I buy and insurance, warranties and guarantee's are available I take them.

Guaranteed a better product as compensation within a year or 2.

How come the turtles died too when they breathe air? Sounds fishy.

Force of the explosion was pretty massive. Also, all that broken glass would have been pretty dangerous. They probably died of shock and blunt trauma.
