A New Mexico man has been arrested after police found him and his children living in a feces-covered home with his dead brother’s body in one of the bedrooms.

Police have charged 44-year-old Terry Cunningham with three counts of child abuse and neglect after an anonymous tip about a dead body. When authorities arrived, they discovered the three children living in deplorable conditions.

The landlord was reportedly set to evict the father but was worried about the wheelchair-bound boy and his two sisters who lived inside the house.

According to the landlord, the family moved in about five years ago. The older brother was reportedly dead in the home for “several days.”

The boy, 15, and his 9-year-old and 11-year-old sisters reportedly told neighbors that they were only allowed to shower once a week.

Police said they found feces on the floor and in the beds. The kitchen was filthy and the children’s room was missing a roof, replaced only with a black plastic sheathing.

The house has since been condemned and will be torn down because it is in such disrepair.

Sgt. Aaron Williamson said “they said the house was one of the worst houses they’d ever been too. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine what those kids go through because they get to the point where that becomes normal for them. You can just see the filth, the years and years. This is not some, ‘well, we just haven’t cleaned the house this week,’ this is a lifestyle.”

The children have been put in the custody of relatives. Medical examiners are looking into the cause of their uncle’s death.

One question, though.
Who was shitting on the floor and beds? None of the people in that house are young enough to not know better. Unless someone is mentally handicapped - possible.

I wondered if it was a matter perhaps of them not being allowed to leave the room...the one with the plastic for a ceiling. It did say the one boy was in a wheelchair as well. Hell could have been drugs or alcohol involved as well with the older members of the house leading to the neglect. Good question though.

Srsly, tho, I'm guessing that the authorities weren't notified regarding the dead uncle because he died of a drug overdose and/or ol' boy didn't want anyone knowing that his kids were living in such deplorable conditions.

Something tells me jail/prison is not going to be kind to that bearded butterball.
