Sloan Churman was born deaf. For 29 years, she has relied on reading lips and, to a very limited extent, hearing aids.

Two months ago, she received Envoy Medical’s Esteem Implant, which utilizes ear drum vibrations to bring hearing back to its users. The reaction, captured by her husband on video, is nothing short of extraordinary. Her pure joy is contagious.

Here’s what she said on her YouTube page:

“I had an implant put in 8 weeks ago called The Esteem Implant by Envoy Medical. I was born deaf and have worn hearing aids from the age of 2, but hearing aids only help so much. I have gotten by this long in life by reading lips. This was taken as they were activating the implant.”

Awesome story. She speaks very well for someone who has been deaf basically their whole life.

I saw this earlier on the net and a lot are calling it fake because of how well she can talk for someone who has been deaf since she was born. I've never come across a person who is completely deaf that can talk. My brother was born completely deaf. They have never heard people speak so they don't know how to pronounce words so it's impossible for them to be able to talk so fluently like that. Some things they can pronounce but not talking so perfectly like that.
The only way she would be able to talk like that is if she was born hearing and then went deaf or she was not completely deaf and with the help of hearing aids she could understand voices.
But it states she is hearing her voice for the first time so therefore she must of been completely deaf

I just read on the youtube where she says:

My whole life I've been complimented on how well I speak. I don't really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English. My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound.

So maybe she was not completely deaf then and she has infact heard before with the help of hearing aids. But still, i know a hell of a lot of deaf people through my brother and even those with hearing implants don't talk as perfect as she does.

I agree. She wasn't looking at the woman and she was talking to her and she was able to decipher what the older woman said. Example : Medical woman : "Can you hear me" she said "Yes"

It is possible to know the language if you never heard it? I know you can read it and even speak it but how can you know what the alphabet sounds like?

Exactly, i'm gonna keep following this
I just can't see how someone could speak so well or even understand someone so perfect when they are talking to her. When you're first hearing words for the first time they would seem a bit "foreign". People speak in different speeds and accents too. You would at least seem to be focusing hard and still lip reading to understand the word totally.

i have a friend whos been hearing impaired since birth and speaks english, assyrian and farsi without a hint of trouble

either way, this was a dope video, always nice to see advances in the medical field

Hearing impaired is different to completely deaf.
