Twenty-one people have been confirmed dead after consuming a lethal local brew in eastern Cameroon.

State broadcaster the Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) reported that the victims had consumed the alcoholic liquor known as odontol.

CRTV on Wednesday morning reported that 22 other people who consumed the whisky were in hospital in critical conditions, quoting Dr Joseph Boris Essono, the head of the medical institution.

The residents of seven villages in the municipality of Mindourou, reportedly consumed the liquor after they returned from their farms.

The whisky

Villagers in the municipality usually consume the ‘hot drink’ during festivities.

About 400 litres of the whisky was consumed in the area daily, authorities say.

“We have taken measures to reduce the amount of the liquor supplied daily in the villages,” said Mr Mboke Godlive Ntua, the senior divisional officer for the Upper Nyong Division.

The dangers

Mr Ntua said the government had dispatched medical teams to the area to search for and provide treatment to other people who may have consumed the lethal drink.

It was not the first time a local brew had killed Cameroonians.

Reports say about 20 people died in Yaoundé after consuming odontol in 1997.

Methanol, which is contained in homemade odontol.

That's why you discard the "heads" and "tails" of a distillation, which are the first and last 2% produced. For example, on a 5-liter wash, you throw out the first and last 100-mL. That's where all the undesirable/deadly shit resides, stuff like methanol and acetone.
