I don't recall ever being so rude to adults to their face until after I hit high school (got tired of my grandmother telling me my dreams of becoming a translator for the US was stupid). Sure, kids always trash-talk when they're with other kids, but at least I was smart enough not to do it within striking range.

True. I know I would have been better off with a few more spankings. As far as my grandmother is concerned, I got pissy with her because she told me all of my dreams were stupid. Not exactly those words, but pretty damn close. For example:

I wanted to be a paleontologist in middle school. She said "You'll never make any money and will end up being homeless because that job doesn't pay."

I wanted to work in a zoo when I was in elementary school. She said "That job will go nowhere; you'll regret it within a week."

Just out of curiosity a few months ago, I told her that I was thinking of going to school for either massage therapy, early childhood development, or perhaps to be a cop because all interest me. She said that none of those jobs were worth shit and I'd end up being murdered in my bed with two of them. With the childhood development, she told me that no one would leave kids with me because I have no experience with them.

It's just like... okay Grandma, what would be a job I could get that would make you happy?

^^ There you go... Start with that question and see where it goes. She does have some life experiences to share but she sounds so negative that it's off-putting. I'm sure she really wants you to do well in life.
